VISA REQUIREMENTS – MEDICAL AID

To comply with the regulation of the Department of Home Affairs of South Africa, proof of Healthcare Insurance/cover for study Visa in terms of Government Gazette No 7524 D/D25th November 2002 is required.

It is also compulsory for international students to have adequate cover, in order to register at the university for the duration of their study.

The university thus recommends a South African Healthcare Plan to international students, who do not have adequate cover.

If you have taken some other foreign Medical cover to secure a study visa from a South African diplomatic mission, please be aware that certain universities and colleges may not accept such medical cover for registration purposes. The universities and colleges require proof of a complete Medical Aid Cover with a South African registered medical aid scheme for the entire academic calendar year

The South African Healthcare Plan provides comprehensive cover for medical costs incurred whilst a member is in or out of hospital. The plan covers the members for sudden unexpected onset of health conditions which require emergency medical or surgical treatment. The cover also includes generous out of hospital cover for doctors consultations and medication and repatriation (optional extra) of mortal remains to the country of origin in the case of death.

It is also advisable that international students make the necessary financial arrangements for the medical aid cover prior to entry into South Africa. Should the student rely on sponsorship, he/she must ensure that the sponsor is advised of this requirement at the onset of the sponsorship or the admission offer from the institution. Payment for the required medical aid cover fee is made directly to the Medical Aid Company, separately from the tuition fees.

The following medical aid schemes have been recommended by most of the universities and colleges. International Education Association of South Africa (IEASA) recommends that students purchase a South African Medical Aid product.
